One phenomenon we’ll be studying this semester is the marked cultural and political polarization of this moment in American society. The “culture wars” are in some ways a coalescence of two giant, antagonistic communities. A few quick indications we’ll talk about on the first night to introduce the idea:

Newman’s cartograms,

education and political leanings,

productivity in red and blue states, and

divergent TV preferences.
